Each Moment Ask Yourself...

At each moment, ask yourself, what do I want to do? And how fast can I do it? Don't do random. Be like Jason Bourne, always have a purpose and intention.

Pay attention to your surroundings, what's happening, make everything a game. Even brushing your teeth. How fast can I brush it? How many minutes did I use to wash up today? It seems ridiculous, but that is the first step towards an autotelic self.

Goal for 2008

For 2008, there is one goal for me. To become a better lover.

Ha ha...

It's more than what you think and it's in more ways than one. In truth, I am merely following the Bible's commandments to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. And to love my neighbour as myself.

The thing is, we don't love enough. Did you know that the opposite of love isn't hate but selfishness? Unfortunately, we live in world surrounded by self-centredness and messages to take care of number one, to take care of our own comfort and prestige. Salesman abound with messages for us to part with our money to indulge in our own whims, fancies and desires. Requests are made of us not for charitable reasons but for the requestor's indulgence.

It isn't easy being a lover. Loving takes wisdom, because we want to make the best choice, take the best course of action for the greater good of everyone.

Loving takes courage, we may have to break a bad habit, make a decision that "isn't me", risk our reputation or the status of a relationship.

Loving someone is actually a hard action because the easier path may be in indulging our own desires instead of someone else's.

Self Development Goals for Rest of 2007

I aim to increase my skills in the following areas:

1. Leadership.
2. Building and Maintaining Relationships.

I think that I've already hit my limit on technical skills that I need to learn, there is always some API to learn, some new technology to learn, and given time I can master them all. Therefore my next area of growth will be in leading and influencing people and in building and maintaining relationships.

The Effort It Takes To Lose 8.8lbs

I need to lose 4kg to reach my ideal weight of 60.5kg.

That is about 8.8lbs.

At 3500kcal/pound = 30800kcal.

A 5.6km run expends 409kcal.

I need to run = 30800/409 = 75 times @ 5.6km each.

Doing it 3 times/week = 25 weeks = 1/2 year, just for 8.8lbs!!!!!

If I want to do it in 1 month with 4 sessions/week = 16 sessions.
30800/16 = 1925kcal/session = 26km/session.

It's so difficult to lose fat. (You have to make sure you don't lose muscle mass as well.)

So, therefore hitting my weight goal in 1 month may not be realistic.

If I target 3 months at 4 sessions a week and running 8km each time, then I can do it. Plus I need to do weight training to maintain muscle mass.

Losing 1kg/month is more realistic for me. (If based purely on exercise to increase calorie consumption).

If I can reduce my caloric intake by 350/day I can lose an additional 3lbs in a month. That's the equivalent of 2 1/2 cans of coke.

Creation Goals

1. A mobile game.
2. An entertainment book for travelers.
3. A mind patterns book.
4. A board game.
5. A web service. (a couple of ideas here I have.)

So many goals? Besides physical, social, intellectual goals?

Well, it's better to have more goals than you can achieve in your lifetime than to have not enough goals at all.

There will still be more goals as you go by in life. When you have children, goals will be added, priorities changed. When you get retrenched or when you win a million dollars certain other goals will be forced upon us or more goals are realizable for us then.

We must know what we want in life rather than get blown about by the wind (trends, fads, frenzys).

Success in life, in a nutshell, is achieving your goals. Whatever it may be. But success isn't just a point in time, it is also a state of being.

When you have goals, then you will realize the value of time. Time isn't a resource in the sense of it being tangible, allocatable, dividable, etc. Any idiot can spend 16 hours in the office and yet not achieve his goals.

When you have goals, which are essentially a state change in terms of outlook, perspective, experience, achievement, etc. you realize then that a state change needs time. It is because we have more goals than we can achieve in our lifetime that we realize the value of time.

Studying for the GRE

After looking at the GRE reports, you realize that if you're going to do a post-grad degree, you'ld better get perfect scores on the quantitative section. (Especially if you're from an engineering or science background.)

And you really feel like an ignoramus when you're asked for the antonyms of words such as "excoriate", "potentate", "peregrination", and "puissant".

There is a proclivity soon after to display an ostentatious and pedantic usage of the words learnt. Quot Erat Demonstratum.
